The 34th Infantry Division The 34th Infantry Division is made of up three main regiments which had supporting units: the 133rd, the 135th, and the 168th. This division as a whole is known as holding the record for the most days in actual combat at 611 days. It participated in six major campaigns in Africa and Italy. The 34th Infantry Division was the first deployed in Europe to fight the Italian Campaign. On March 11, Boggs' unit, the 168th Infantry Regiment, joined up with the 34th Division in Naples, Italy. There were 3,373 soldiers killed in action in the 34th Infantry Division with William L. Boggs being one of them. There were also 11,545 wounded in action, 622 missing in action, 1,368 prisoners of war, and 16,401 total battle casualties. The 34th Infantry Division was awarded many rewards. Medals of Honor, Silver Stars, Bronze Stars, Legions of Merit, Soldier’s Medals, and Purple Hearts are just some of the different rewards. William was awarded a Purple Heart with an Oak Leaf after his death. The 168th Infantry Regiment was also known as the “Third Iowa.” Just over a year after Boggs died, this regiment was inactivated on November 3, 1945 at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia.
